A recent article published by Henrietta Cook from The Sydney Morning Herald described a growing and possibly problematic rise in the segregation of children with disabilities.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”Text” _builder_version=”3.21.4″ text_font=”PT Serif||||” text_text_color=”#363636″ text_font_size=”20″ text_font_size_last_edited=”on|tablet” text_line_height=”1.5em” background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” max_width=”620px” custom_margin=”30px||0px|” use_border_color=”off” border_color=”#ffffff” border_style=”solid”]

A research study completed by Monash University showed that the inclusion of autistic students in mainstream classes had dropped significantly, and many had moved to special schools.

Dr Kate de Bruin mentioned in Cook’s article that this segregation could derive from a lack of resources, inadequate teacher training and myths on disruptive behaviour of students with disability. Early learning experiences are an essential part of a child’s development, which should be enriching and welcoming.

Utilising technology to create a better study space for individuals that are at risk of segregation on the basis of disability may be a solution.

Instead of being so quick to push a student out of mainstream classes in fear of class disruptions, we can adopt new teaching methods and implement new tools to assist in a disability child’s development. Study Space and many other educational technology providers are doing exactly that, creating interactive learning tools that can help teachers, and students in their learning and early childhood development. The pressure shouldn’t be placed on teachers alone; instead, tools and methodologies need to adapt to assist a teacher in giving these individuals the right help without taking time away from the rest of the classes learning.

This branches further than just disability children, but also covers individual students that may fall behind, and become disruptive due to frustration and inability to comprehend current class topics. Leveraging technological learning tools you can isolate students that need extra attention and use assisted digital learning tools to bring them up to speed gradually in a non-intrusive manner.
