The rapid inclusion of technology into educational systems globally has meant that the role of the teacher might change completely. As populations continue to grow exponentially, the need for teachers is increasing by 1.5 million per year on average (holoniq 2019).

The five scenarios include;

  • An education-as-usual outcome, where the traditional method of teaching is still the most trusted source of education.
  • Regional alliances outcomes that cater to politically aligned labour goals.
  • ‘Global Giants’ outcome with a possibility of juggernauts of education arising from globalisation trends.
  • Peer-to-Peer outcome that will rely heavily on technology to provide a productive online human-to-human experience.
  • ‘Robo Revolution’ where completely virtual tutors and mentors conduct all learning activities.

In most of these scenarios, the result will be the same; the teacher’s role will have to adapt to no longer be the end-all and be-all of classroom education. As technology has made information so readily available (having boundless amounts of information available in the palm of our hands) we may find that a teacher’s role will become more of a mentor or coach that guides students on their educational journey. Is that bad? The short answer is no.

As populations rise globally, we are facing many issues in education, a shortage of teachers, schools and resources, to name a few. Any of these possible scenarios put forward by Holon IQ will rely heavily on the technology being adapted adequately into our children’s education. If a proper implementation of educational technology exists in our near future, teachers will be able to handle more students with less effort. Teaching may become more adaptable to individual students needs meaning students could get the individual attention they require in a technologically enabled way.

Technological advancement means this may be the most exciting time in the history of our civilisation when it comes to education! Learning has many possible futures from this moment, and though the path the world takes is still unclear, one thing can be sure, the role of the teacher will change. Will they be ready when the time comes, who knows for certain?
